        Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) Zhongshan School of Medicine owns the largest comprehensive healthcare system in China, including 5 general and 3 specialized hospitals and 13 branch community hospitals with over 11,000 beds, 13 million outpatient visits and 200,000 hospitalized surgeries every year.         The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University
         
        The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, originally known as the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Public Institution of Medicine, was founded in 1910 by Dr. Paul Jerome Todd (an American medical missionary) with 40 western doctors.
         
        The Hospital is composed of the Headquarter, East Division and Huiya Hospital. The Huangpu Division mainly focuses on Orthopedics and traumatic first aid while the Dongshan Division mainly focuses on Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pediatrics.
         
        The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is an important base for research, medical service, medical education, preventive care and rehabilitation in South China. It is well known for its high quality and excellent service in China and Southeast Asia. For years, it has been recognized as the most reliable hospital in mainland China by Hong Kong residents.
         
        1. Faculty & Departments
         
        Currently, there are 5,276 members of staff in the hospital, including 1,399 medical staff, 384 technicians and 2,417 nurses. There are 61 clinical departments and 15 non-clinical departments in the hospital with a good reputation for clinical service, among which 5 disciplines - Nephrology, General Surgery, Neurology, Otorhinolaryngology and Endocrinology - have been recognized by the Ministry of Education as National Key Disciplines. There are also 28 National Clinical Specialties in the hospital, such as Gastroenterology, Obstetrics, Gynecology, ICU, etc. Department of Rehabilitation has been selected as a WHO Collaborating Center for Rehabilitation.  The Laboratory of Nephrology and the Laboratory on Assisted Circulation are Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Health.
         
        2. Research Activities
         
        Over the past 10 years, the hospital has won 90 awards for achievements in research and development. They include 3 “The Second Prize for National Science & Technology Progress” (Prof. Xiuling Liang in 2000, Prof. Guihua Chen in 2004, Prof. Xueqing Yu in 2006), 16 “The Prize of Chinese Medical Science & Technology”, 5 “The First Prize for Science & Technology Progress in Guangdong”.  It has undertaken 885 various research projects supported by MOST (Ministry of Science & Technology), “973 Project”, “863 Project”, and the National Natural Science Fund.  Currently, 49 experts in the hospital are appointed as the chairs of different medical societies in Guangdong and China. In addition, the hospital manages 8 national key medical journals, including Chinese Journal of Nephrology, Chinese Journal of Microsurgery, Chinese Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Chinese Journal of Neurological and Psychological Diseases, Chinese Archives of General Surgery, Journal of Image & Interventional Radiology and Modern Clinical Nursing.
         
        3. Medical Services
         
        With 3,888 beds, hospital serves more than 4.8 million outpatients every year. There are more than 68,700 surgical operations and 102,536 discharges annually.  The hospital has a Private Medical Center, which draws patients from around the world and offers a specialist medical service for them.  The hospital is also equipped with a variety of advanced medical equipments such as PET-CT, 3T-MRI, 64 Slides Spiral CT, ECT, TCD, EMG, Doppler, bidirectional cardio angiographic equipment, heart monitoring system, extracorporeal shockwave lithotripter, electronic endoscope, etc.  Based on its advanced technology, the hospital successfully diagnosed and cured many critical, difficult and rare diseases, such as the first case of dieresis in the country for conjoined twins and the craniopagus twins, the operation to rectify a child born with 3 legs and the first operation in Asia to transplant the kidney and liver simultaneously.
         
        4. Medical Education
         
        The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is the biggest clinical teaching base of Sun Yat-sen University, taking up more than 60% of the clinical teaching tasks as well as post-graduate education and continuing education. There are 155 PhD tutors and 274 master tutors. Each year, there are over 750 students graduating from the hospital with PhD or master degree. The hospital is also an important base for national continuing medical education. The hospital undertakes more than 25 continuing medical education programs each year. It offers clinical training programs for doctors and other health professionals from all over the world and more than 1,000 medical workers receive their medical training in the hospital each year.
         
        5. Exchange and Cooperation
         
        At present, the First Affiliated Hospital has established academic collaboration with hospitals from more than 20 countries and regions, such as UT Southwestern Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Hospital, UCLA Health System in U.S.A., University of Birmingham in U.K., Lund University in Sweden, Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong, etc. It hosts more than 10 international academic conferences each year.

        Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital (the Second Affiliated Hospital)
         
        Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, SYSU, also called the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU), was originally founded in 1835 as an eye clinic by the American missionary named Dr. Peter Parker. It is the first hospital in China that provided western medical service and the primary place where Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, the great revolutionary forerunner, studied medicine and later pursued the path to build a democratic nation. With an exciting period of growth and expansion for about 179 years, the hospital has developed into a Class A teaching hospital in China, famous for its medical service, education, research and health care.
         
        As a pioneer in western medicine practice, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital is the hospital that practiced the first ophthalmological surgery, the first ovariotomy, the first lithocystotomy, the first etherization, and the first pathological anatomy in China. It also had China’s first X-ray film shot and the first medical magazine printed. After founding China’s first western medical school with the name of Boji Medical School, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital nurtured the nation’s first medical overseas student and nurse. Known as the cradle of China’s western medicine practice and one of the birthplaces of China’s medical talents, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital has been a keen contributor to China’s medical causes, thanks to the devotion of many famous medical experts and educators such as Lin Shumo, Chen Yaozhen, Xie Zhiguang, Zhong Shifan, Qin Guangyu, Chen Xintao, Zhou Shoukai, Mao Wenshu and Chen Guozhen.
         
        Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital now owns three hospital campuses and one clinic: the Northern Campus (the Headquarter), the Southern Campus, the Zengcheng Campus and the clinic at the Southern Campus of SYSU. Its staff number exceeds 4,200, including two Chang Jiang Scholars (also known as Cheung Kong Scholars), one Chief Scientist for the 973 Project, 429 senior professionals, 58 PhD supervisors, and 138 Master supervisors. Among the medical professionals, five are vice chairs of state-level academic associations, 12 are chairs of provincial academic associations, and 13 are vice chairs of provincial associations. With more than 2,200 inpatient beds available, the hospital performs over 50,000 inpatient operations, discharges about 80,000 inpatients, and handles more than 3 million outpatient visits annually.
         
        Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital continues to seek breakthroughs in medical science. It has nine nation-level key clinical specialties, 23 province-level key clinical specialties, one key high-education laboratory of provincial level, one key medical laboratory for the Twelfth Five-Year Plan of Guangdong Province, and two key medical disciplines for the Twelfth Five-Year Plan of Guangdong Province. Moreover, it has constantly won the sponsorship from the "973" and "863" National Projects, the A3 International Cooperation Project of the National Natural Science Foundation, and the National Science and Technology Major Project. In recent years, the hospital has consistently been one of the best hospitals in Guangdong Province in terms of receiving the research grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
         
        Moreover, the hospital has increased its academic influence by publishing research articles at prestigious academic journals including Cell and Cancer Cell. In 2012, it published over 200 papers at SCI journals, with a total impact factor of 350 odd.

For example, there are interventional treatment for coronary heart disease, and radiofrequency ablation treatment for atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in the department of Cardiology; diagnosis and treatment of diabetes in the department of Endocrinology; correction of spinal deformity, diagnosis and treatment of degenerative disc disease, surgical treatment of spinal tumor, arthroscopic ligament reconstruction, and artificial joint revision in the department of Orthopedics Surgery; comprehensive treatment for large hepatocellular carcinoma in the department of Hepatobiliary Surgery; breast and axillary preserving surgery, and adjuvant chemotherapy of breast cancer in the department of Breast Surgery; minimally invasive surgery of urological tumor in the department of Urology; treatment of gynecological endocrine diseases, human assisted reproductive technology, diagnosis and treatment of cervical lesions, and diagnosis and combined therapy of cervical cancer in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; diagnosis and treatment of hereditary hemolytic anemia, leukemia, aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia purpura, lymphoma and other solid tumors, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation of children in the department of Pediatric hematology; diagnosis and treatment of medical fungi, lupus erythematosus and other connective tissue diseases in the department of Dermatology.
         
        With the efforts of all the staff, the hospital has constantly won top rankings as well as recognitions in the medical field. This is the first hospital in Guangdong Province that has been rated as a Class A tertiary general hospital by the Ministry of Health in China. It has been enlisted as one of the “Model Hospitals” at both provincial and national level.         Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center
         
        Sun Yat-sen University Ophthalmic Center is the first and leading advanced ophthalmic center and the last resort for advanced eye care in China, integrating eye care, teaching, eye research and blindness prevention. It is also one of the 20 largest general ophthalmic centers in the world. In 2006, Sun Yat-sen University Ophthalmic Center was approved to be the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, the only one of its kind in China.
